The ENVO Echo is the unit people picture when they say "smart toilet." Tankless, so there's no porcelain box behind it and no tank to clean around. The lid opens as you walk up — motion sensor, foot sensor, or remote, your choice — and it flushes four different ways so nobody in the house has to touch a handle.

What you actually notice day one

The heated seat. It holds a steady, comfortable temperature instead of the cold shock of standard porcelain, and it's the feature nobody gives up once they've lived with it. Right behind it: the warm-water wash, which stays at a set temperature rather than running hot then cold, and the adjustable dryer that follows it.

The hygiene side

A UV sterilizing nozzle treats the wand between uses. The nozzle itself oscillates front-to-back rather than firing one fixed stream, and it offers three wash modes — a gentle setting, a front wash, and a standard rear wash. A water-purifying filter sits inline, and a carbon deodorizer runs automatically so the room doesn't need a fan running.

Water and power

1.28 GPF, tankless, so water is drawn only as the flush needs it. There is no reservoir sitting full between uses. An emergency battery backup lets you flush during a power outage — battery is not included, and we'd rather tell you that now than have you find out in a storm.

Before you order — two things to check

• Power. Like every smart toilet, this needs a GFCI outlet within reach. If your bathroom doesn't have one behind the toilet, that's an electrician, not a plumber. Price it before you buy.
• Delivery. This unit is 88 lbs and moves by LTL freight, which means curbside. The driver brings it to the end of your driveway, not into your bathroom. Have a second set of hands ready, and inspect the crate before you sign the delivery receipt.

Installation

Standard 12-inch rough-in. It uses the same supply line and floor flange as the toilet you're removing, and a wax seal is included. If you can set a standard toilet, you can set this one — the electrical is the only new variable.
